Freedom was their goal

Prisoners on the notorious Robben Island during the apartheid era formed their own football association, Makana FA. They built their own pitch, organised league and cup competitions,  playing the game as a symbol of their refusal to surrender to the regime. Yet they never had their own strip or badge. They do now with a specially designed shirt from Philosophy Football presented to surviving prisoners by England Fans during World Cup 2010. Now you can have yours too and celebrate one of the most inspiring tales of the power of football.

Playing For England / John Hemmingham

Description:

If you know Fever Pitch, The Full Monty and Brassed Off, merge all three for the true story of the England Supporter’s Band and ‘Playing for England’.
It tells the story of what it’s like to play for England. How, if you become obsessed with football at an early age, you can end up playing for England.
A roller coaster ride from the terraces to releasing records, meeting celebrities, players, travelling the world and suffering the lows but really celebrating the highs that watching England brings.
Nothing else matters when you’re wearing the shirt and giving your all for your country. You will sweat blood to ensure an England victory.
Richard Branson personally persuaded them to sign up for their first chart making record deal and the Band have since released many others plus three singles and an album for the World Cup 2010. They have made numerous TV and Radio appearances.
“Our dream is to play one day for England at the World Cup Final .”
